Mindy Sotiri is a singer-songwriter from Sydney, Australia.
She writes tunes. And plays them.
Quite often in front of other people.
Mostly drunk, exhausted, women people.
Who live in Marrickville.
She pretty much has the drunk exhausted Marrickville women people market smashed.
She has been playing to those women for years.
‘Women Smoking’, is Mindy’s fifth solo album. Released in May 2018, it is about women smoking. And women. And smoking. It is also about the Sydney lock out laws, unexpected love, unexpected endings, crowded parties, booze and balconies, Newtown in 2015, and the under-appreciated role of the rehearsal girlfriend.
Produced by the annoyingly talented Josh Schuberth at Love Hz Studios, and featuring the beautiful playing of Josh, Lara Goodridge and the always sublime singing of Blazey Best and Karen Stokes, Women smoking is a bolder beast than any of Mindy’s previous records. This is an album that knocks on the door and pushes you against the wall and tells you important STUFF (but in a RESPECTFUL CONSENSUAL WAY GODDAMNIT).
When Mindy is not singing songs about women smoking, she works as the Director of Advocacy, Policy and Research at the Community Restorative Centre, and spends her time getting cranky about over-imprisonment, and trying to convince people to fund services for people leaving prison. She also oversees the Songbirds: Ballads Behind Bars program and spends a lot of time thinking about the role of music and arts in incarcerated populations.
